Product Diversification. Tourism Development.

16/ May 2022 – 25/ May 2022

How could you better study tourism than by traveling?

In the context of my LTM studies, I have recently been on my third and last field trip to Northern Portugal. Within 9 days, we visited 5 cities – all of them with a unique identity and an interesting profile in the tourism market.

Our Program

  • Porto
  • Aveiro
  • Viana do Castelo
  • Braga
  • Pointe de Lima

Tourism in Northern Portugal

Northern Portugal, despite of being located at the Mediterranean coast, has seen first encouraging successes in following a different tourism development concept other than the classical sun, sand, and sea tourism.

Instead of promoting the coastline and the natural beauty of the region for the sake of these assets alone, Portugal has shown a well-reflected capability to learn from their competitors and develop tourism products, management approaches promotional messages that tie those assets to the destination’s history, the social community, their cultural identity, and their economic activities.

On our visit we met experts from the tourism industry across all fields and sectors and got some very interesting and deep insights into the country, its culture and the role both could play in the European tourism industry in the future.

Topics and Visits

  • Territorial and Product Development through Tile and Film Tourism (3 Tour Guides in Porto and Braga)
  • Rural Tourism (Research Projects by the University of Aveiro)
  • Community Participation in Tourism (Municipality of Ílhavo and Casa Cultura in Ílhavo)
  • Valorization of Natural Heritage (The Bacalao Industry and the Maritime Museum in Ílhavo)
  • Porcelain and Fine Arts (Factory Visit & Interactive Workshop at Vista Alegre)
  • Quality Tourism in Northern Portugal (5 Star Hotel “Mont Bello” Vista Alegre)
  • Geotourism (Panel Talk and Guided Visit of Geoparc Arouca (Arouca Suspense Bridge, Paiva Walkways, Pedras Parideiras, Mizarela Waterfall))
  • Multifunctional Museums (Museu dos Bisceinhos in Braga)
  • Religious and Spiritual Tourism (The Camino de Santiago)
  • Digital Transformation in Tourism (Viana Welcome Centre “Vivexperience”)
  • Tourism Studies at Polytechnical Institute of Viana do Castelo
  • Culinary and Wine Tourism (Academic Talk on the Future of Tourism in Portugal)

Insights and Learnings

The impressions I received during the trip made me reflect about the potentials and challenges Portugal might face in the future. If Northern and Central Portugal concentrates its efforts on structurally strengthening and valorizing its various opportunities to build niche tourism markets, it could probably become “the better Spain“.

Biggest future potentials:

Slow Tourism

Rural Tourism

Community-based Festival Tourism

Future Challenges:

Avoidance of Residential Ex-Urban Sprawl

Accessibility

Promotion of a clear Destination Brand

My Resume

I really enjoyed having taken this trip and am glad for the experience. It was really a highlight during my semester and the beauty of the country and the hospitality of the people convinced me to definitely come back. Next time, without any obligations towards my study. 😉
